Norway attacks

July 22 saw the horrific attacks of Anders Behring Breivik in Oslo and on the island of Utøya .

Breivik exploded a car bomb in the the executive government quarter in Oslo. The explosion killed eight people and injured 10.

Breivik then travelled to Utøya where he opened fire on a youth camp, killing 69 and injuring 66.

He admitted responsibilty for both acts of terriosim but said his actions were “atrocious but necessary.”

Breivik considered himself a knight dedicated to stemming the tide of Muslim immigration into Europe. He had extreme hatred of Islam and was diganosed as a paranoid schizophrenic.

Following January’s independence referendum, Southern Sudan is formed from Sudan.
  Economy 

Portuguese and Irish debt was cut to junk status because of fears they would need further bail outs.

 

The month was a considerably quiet month allowing hard working economist’s to enjoy their summer holidays in relative peace before the end of year storm.

  America On July 5, 2011 Casey Anthony was found not guilty of killing her daughter, Caylee Marie Anthony.
  MusicDJ Fresh’s ‘Louder’ made a brief stint at the top of the charts until The Wanted released ‘Glad You Came’ which was number one for two weeks. But this was short lived as  boy band JLS then replaced The Wanted with ‘She Makes Me Wanna’.
 

 

 

 

 

 

SportAnother month and another golf major. This time it was The Open Championship which this year was taking place at the Royal St George’s Golf Club in Kent, England. For the third major in a row this year there was another first time major winner as Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland won the championship by three strokes.

In the world of boxing, one of the most anticipated fights of the last year finally took place as Wladimir Klitschko took on brit David Haye in a heavyweight unification fight. Klitschko and Haye had agreed to put all of their titles on the line for this winner takes all fight. Wladimir convincingly came out on top as he defeated Haye with a unanimous decision by the judges. Adding the WBA heavyweight title to the three he already had Klitschko was now the unified heavyweight champion of the world.

The highest profile event in the cycling calendar, the Tour de France also took place. Australian Cadel Evans won the yellow jersey but it was Brit Mark Cavendish who took the headlines after he won the green jersey by winning the points classification with a total of 334 points.
