Riots in Barcelona ahead of tough austerity measures

By Naila Missous, Barcelona

Protesters and police clashed yesterday in Barcelona during the official general strike over labour market reforms.

Shops were set alight and windows were smashed with the police responding with baton charges. The fire brigade was also on sight.

Land and air travel were both affected with bus and rail services kept to a minimum. University students were advised to stay home from March 28.

Today sees Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy unveiling measures aimed to save billions of Euros, making it easier for businesses to sack workers.

Almost half of Spain’s under 25’s population are out of work.
