The home and offices of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy have been raided by French police as part of an investigation into how his campaign for office was financed in 2007.
The investigation relates to alleged illegal donations from France’s wealthiest woman, L’Oreal heir, Liliane Bettencourt, to Sarkozy’s UMP party during the election campaign in 2007.
In France, individual campaign contributions are capped at €4,600 yet it is alleged Bettencourt donated well over €100,000 to UMP.
Today’s raid is part of a wider police investigation into whether or not UMP received upto €800,000 in illegal donations from a number of donors.
Sarkozy has denied any involvement in the scandal.
